Ibrahima Konaté

Real Madrid could disrupt Arne Slot’s defensive rebuild at Liverpool with moves for both Ibrahima Konaté and Marc Guehi, according to reports from Spain.

Liverpool’s summer dealings

The Reds reshaped much of their squad during the summer, bringing in Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Alexander Isak and two new goalkeepers.

To balance the books, Liverpool raised significant funds through the sales of Darwin Núñez, Luis Díaz and several squad players.

A deal for Guehi nearly capped off a perfect window for Slot, with a £35m agreement struck with Crystal Palace on deadline day.

The defender even completed a medical before Palace pulled the plug after failing to sign a replacement.

That decision left Joe Gomez at Anfield and ensured Virgil van Dijk and Konaté remain the starting centre-back pairing.

Madrid’s opportunity

Reports now claim Crystal Palace have lowered Guehi’s asking price to £25m ahead of January. Liverpool remain keen, but Spanish outlet Fichajes insists Real Madrid have entered the race.

With Guehi’s contract expiring in June, Madrid are in a stronger position than Premier League rivals, as they can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with him from January.

Real view Guehi as a key piece in their defensive renewal and may even move quickly with a January offer to get ahead of Liverpool.

Ibrahima Konaté also on Madrid’s radar

It’s not just Guehi attracting Los Blancos. Konaté has also been linked with a potential free transfer switch to the Bernabéu next summer.

Madrid are reportedly monitoring his situation closely, with the French international seen as another long-term option in central defence.

Interestingly, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher recently admitted he “isn’t the biggest fan” of Konaté, fuelling further debate over his long-term role under Slot.

Liverpool’s dilemma

If Madrid push forward on both fronts, Liverpool could face the prospect of losing not one but two central defenders who were key to their current structure.

Guehi’s failed move on deadline day has already left frustration at Anfield, and losing him — along with Konaté — would force Slot back into the market sooner than expected.
