On the field, Manchester United’s poor performance continues to unravel squander at weakness, especially at the left wing-back position; manager Ruben Amorim is said to have set eyes on Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, among other targets.
The team’s campaign worsened in the last month, leading to the direct-season conclusion; United lost two vital matches, including a dull 2-0 loss to Newcastle United.
That ensured that the Manchester side recorded their fifth consecutive loss in their last six Premier League matches, which put Amorim in the spotlight despite him being appointed only two months ago as the manager.
Despite this, Amorim’s relative approach, a favourite of using wing-backs in a 3-4-3 formation, unveiled the lack of depth in United.
He has even advocated for signing higher-priced players to boost the likelihood of his plans of succeeding, but the current squad is not composed of such players, and left wing-back is still a major issue.
Mendes, who worked with Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, is being viewed as the one best suited for the position.
Some sources claim Amorim is telling Mendes that the 2025 objective is United, with the English club reportedly making a bid to PSG.
Factors contributing to discussions about a possible reunion include the player’s relationships with Aguillé, the contract with Amorim, and the involvement of Ignacio Aguillo, who is Amorim’s agent.
The 21-year-old Portuguese international has not signed a new contract with PSG, which is in force till the year 2026.
PSG Set €50 Million For Nuno Mendes
PSG’s management has been rumoured to sell, with the team putting €50 million (£41.5 million) worth on their heads. Although this figure simply shows a small profit on the transfer Mendes had signed the player for £34 million from Sporting Lisbon while sharing a sell-on percentage with the Portugal-based club.
However, it may not be that smooth for Manchester United because of their financial problems in making such purchases.
It means the club may have to sell players or find ways of raising money to sign Mendes; for which the door will be open for rivals to approach.
As it stands, Mendes continues to be a “preferred option” for a potential transfer in 2025.
It remains to be seen whether United can sign him given that the road is only cleared for their financial woes and the editorial wades through the interest from other clubs.
