Newcastle United are reportedly preparing a €50 million (£43m) bid to sign Atletico Madrid forward Alexander Sorloth in the January transfer window, according to Fichajes.

The 29-year-old Norwegian is open to a move away from Spain in search of more regular football after struggling for consistent minutes under Diego Simeone.

Sorloth enjoyed a prolific campaign last season, scoring 24 goals across all competitions, but has since found himself behind Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann in the pecking order.

Newcastle, who brought in Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa during the summer, are still keen on adding another proven striker to strengthen Eddie Howe’s options up front.

Sorloth’s next step uncertain

The Magpies recently scouted Sorloth during the Madrid Derby and were reportedly impressed by his performance and physical presence.

A return to the Premier League could be an attractive prospect for the Norwegian, who previously had a brief spell with Crystal Palace.

However, while Newcastle can offer European ambitions and a competitive squad, Sorloth may not be guaranteed the regular starting role he desires.

Staying at Atletico seems equally challenging, meaning a winter transfer could hinge on his willingness to rotate or push for a lead role elsewhere.
