Manchester United are expected to re-enter the transfer market this January, with a new midfielder now emerging as the club’s top priority.

After an active summer that saw five arrivals, including Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, attention has shifted to reinforcing the midfield.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs via The United Stand, United could revisit their interest in Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher.

The Red Devils failed with a loan bid for the England international late in the summer, but a mid-season move could now be possible if Diego Simeone’s side open the door.

Jacobs revealed that Atletico would demand more than £35 million for a permanent transfer. However, a loan deal remains United’s preferred route.

“If Atletico open the door to a loan formula for Conor Gallagher mid-season, I think that’s a deal Manchester United will do,” Jacobs said.

Conor Gallagher fits Amorim’s midfield vision

With Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton unlikely to be available before next summer, Gallagher could offer United a ready-made solution.

The 25-year-old has struggled for minutes at Atletico, making mostly substitute appearances, including in the recent Champions League loss to Arsenal.

For manager Ruben Amorim, Gallagher’s energy, pressing ability, and versatility make him a strong fit. He thrives in box-to-box roles, combining defensive discipline with late attacking runs.

His Premier League experience also means he could adapt instantly to Amorim’s system.

Gallagher’s motivation is clear — a return to England could boost his chances of securing a spot in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

For United, a loan with an option to buy for around £35 million could represent smart business, especially as the club aims to maintain momentum in their push for a top-four finish.
