Manchester United and Liverpool are reportedly among the clubs closely monitoring Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano, whose contract situation has become increasingly uncertain.
According to German outlet Bild, the French international’s deal is set to expire in June 2026, but renewal talks have reached a stalemate — mainly due to disagreements over his signing-on fee.
While the base salary package has been agreed, the centre-back is demanding a substantial bonus similar to the £15 million that Alphonso Davies received when he signed his latest extension.
Contract talks reach a deadlock
Bayern Munich are keen to keep hold of their defensive lynchpin, but negotiations have stalled.
Upamecano, now 26, has reportedly made it clear that he wants a comparable financial package to Davies if he is to commit his future to the Bavarians.
This impasse has opened the door for several elite European clubs to make their move.
Alongside Real Madrid, both Manchester United and Liverpool are understood to be closely following developments, with an eye toward a potential approach in January or next summer.
Premier League interest growing
Manchester United’s interest stems from their ongoing defensive rebuild under Ruben Amorim.
The club parted ways with Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans last season, and with Harry Maguire’s contract expiring next summer, reinforcements will be essential.
Upamecano, currently valued at around £43 million, could represent a bargain given his experience at the highest level and potential availability at a reduced fee if talks with Bayern collapse.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are also in the market for defensive reinforcements. Ibrahima Konaté’s long-term future remains uncertain, as his deal runs out next year, while Giovanni Leoni’s serious knee injury has left Arne Slot short of depth at the back.
The Reds could push for a new centre-back as early as the January transfer window — and Upamecano’s familiarity with the Premier League’s pace and physicality makes him an ideal fit.
Bayern’s stance and Upamecano’s form
Despite past inconsistencies under Thomas Tuchel, Upamecano has been rejuvenated since Vincent Kompany’s arrival at the Allianz Arena.
His composure, athleticism, and improved ball distribution have reestablished him as one of the Bundesliga’s standout defenders. Bayern remain determined to retain him, but the financial standoff has created a window of opportunity for rivals.
What next for Dayot Upamecano?
If Bayern fail to meet his demands, a January sale could be on the table to avoid losing him for free in 2026. Both Manchester United and Liverpool are expected to test the waters should the situation remain unresolved by the winter window.
For now, Bayern are holding firm, but with Real Madrid also circling and Premier League interest heating up, the race for Dayot Upamecano’s signature could become one of the defining transfer battles of 2026.
