Manchester United Target Nuno Mendes as PSG Contract Talks Stall

Manchester United are said to be tracking Paris Saint-Germain fullback Nuno Mendes, who is also a target for the Ligue 1 side for the new season, in their bid to tie the 22-year-old down.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg, who wrote in Bild, explains that despite this, Mendes has no intention of renewing his current deal at PSG, which will expire in 2026.

Mendes signed for PSG in 2021, signing a loan deal from Sporting CP before completing the transfer to PSG for €38m the following year.

The Portuguese international has continued to maintain his position in the starting lineup despite Lucas Hernandez being in the team. This season, Mendes has seen an increase in playing time compared to the last, where he was limited to only a handful of appearances, coming off the bench in six league matches due to persistent injuries that plagued him throughout the previous season.

In contrast, Hernandez has also faced the challenges with injuries this season, spending a significant amount of time sidelined. Their situations highlight the ongoing battle for fitness and form within the squad as both players strive to establish their roles on the team.

PSG have already sought means to renew Mendes’s contract to have him commit to the club until 2029. The player’s agents have recently held talks with the club, and, as per Fabrizio Romano, the negotiations are going smoothly. However, the interest from Manchester United could prove a setback.

United need a left-back and Mendes and AC Milan’s Théo Hernandez seem to be on United’s radar of potential players. His defensive solidity, paired with attacking prowess, has ensured that Mendes is considered one of the best young fullbacks in Europe, and since he will be available in the transfer window, top clubs could battle for his signature.

Nuno Mendes Is Not Willing To Renew At PSG

According to Plettenberg, Mendes is currently not keen on negotiating a new contract for PSG in the next few months such that there is room for teams like United to swoop in.

Man United knows all about this situation and may seek to take advantage of the French international lack of a long-term plan.

Mendes has a close working relationship with PSG, and while they would not want to let go of such a powerful agent, losing him would weaken PSG’s depth and push Manchester United to further their efforts to strengthen their defence.
