Alvaro Fernandez

Manchester United seem to be in a better position to sign Benfica’s young defender Alvaro Fernandez than Barcelona and Real Madrid it was claimed by A Bola.

The Red Devils, who are having a difficult time this first half in the Premier League under new boss Ruben Amorim, will be in the market for strengthening in January, with a left-back at the top of the list. Fernandez has been branded a prominent transfer target because he is a former United academy player.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are also closely observing the young player who is only 21 years old. Barcelona have a Champions League tie against Benfica next month and are likely to assess Fernandez before deciding on their next move.

A Lot Of Top Clubs Are Interested To Sign Alvaro Fernandez

AC Milan, on the other hand, remains in contention to sign Alvaro Fernandez after the Valencia match, while Real Madrid monitors his performance against tough teams as they seek to sign the wonder kid.

Both Spanish giants could trigger Fernandez’s £42 million release clause but Manchester United have an ace card because of a £17 million buy-back clause in the contract signed by the player.

Since Fernandez was permanently signed to Benfica in the winter for £5m, his progression has been incredible. Initially a rotational player under Roger Schmidt, he has produced good results under the manager.

The Spain International has played 21 games this season and he has 2 goals and 2 assists, and he has been integral in the Primeira Liga. He prides himself in an average of 25 opposition–half passes per game, 4.7 recoveries, and a 62% duel success rate, which makes him suitable for Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

However, during his loan stay at Preston North End, Fernandez also performed the duties of a left wing-back which he can again do at Old Trafford.

Amorim was a fan of Alvaro Fernandez when he was at Sporting CP, and therefore, the young defender might establish himself at Old Trafford pretty soon.

This change might mean the final days for Luke Shaw at Manchester United as the left-back struggles with injuries and Tyrell Malacia might have to compete for the starting position.

Due to that, coupled with experiences in negotiations and Fernandez’s capacity to enhance the team’s left wing, the Red Devils signing of the Spanish midfielder could define the January transfer market.
