Left-back Tyrell Malacia will spend the rest of this season as a PSV Eindhoven player after Manchester United confirmed his transfer.
The transfer from Manchester United emerged after manager Ruben Amorim blocked his opportunities to play due to a tough period following his return from injury in November.
After returning from his injury, Malacia started in just five matches across nine competitive games, and he appeared in the Premier League only three times.
Manchester United acquired Danes full-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce bringing Malacia into an even lower position on their defensive depth chart.
Strong reports suggested Malacia would join Benfica on a loan deal before the proposed transfer collapsed.
The Dutch champions PSV made a deal to acquire Malacia since they outpaced Benfica as his preferred club destination. PSV’s interest in Malacia’s acquisition from United triggered the finalizing of this left-back transfer to PSV.
On Tuesday when the Dutch transfer window closed one day late after Manchester United had reached their deadline, Malacia finalized his switch to Eindhoven.
Tyrell Malacia To PSV Is Done
The terms of their agreement obligate PSV to fully subsidize the wages which Malacia earns from January until his return to Manchester United.
A provision within this agreement allows PSV to acquire Malacia’s permanent rights for €10 million (£8.3 million) by the season’s conclusion and Manchester United will obtain 30% from any sale.
The move of Malacia occurs at a vital moment for both Manchester United and PSV. He joins PSV Eindhoven at a perfect moment because the team occupies the top spot in Eredivisie and is gearing up to play Juventus in the Champions League round of 16.
Manchester United benefits from this loan transfer because it allows them to remove an underutilized player from their team and generate future payments if PSV permanently acquires his services.
All observers across the Netherlands will examine Malacia’s performance to determine if his new opportunity for first-team starts leads him to his former Old Trafford promise.
