Liverpool decided to sign Martin Zubimendi next year’s January transfer window, and the rumours have circulated this deal all year long and don’t seem to end as the year runs out.
The 24-year-old Spanish international was outstanding for his nation when they claimed the UEFA European Championship this summer to show he is one of the best midfielders in Europe.
Liverpool has previously tried to lure the player away from Real Sociedad during the last summer transfer window, but the 24-year-old decided to remain loyal to his childhood club for at least one more season.
However, the Reds have not lost interest in Martin Zubimendi and 2025 might just be that time when the playmaker accepts a new challenge in his career.
But, according to the sporting director of the Spanish club, Roberto Olabe, there is no way Mikel will be allowed to leave the club in January.
Liverpool Still Has Interest In Martin Zubimendi
In an interview over the weekend, Olabe was confident that Zubimendi wanted to remain at the Basque club.
We can confirm that Zubimendi does have a release clause but, as is always the case, it is the player’s choice.
He has demonstrated commitment to our project at all times. Regarding his departure, Olabe commented: “I don’t expect any twist in January.
Rumours over the player’s intended transfer arose when he was missing from Sociedad’s list of players set to play against Celta Vigo.
However, when Olabe gave his assessment of Liverpool in January, it seemed that the club might need to manage their expectations of Zubimendi signing for the Reds in the winter transfer window.
A summer switch appears more probable should the player depart.
Since Liverpool-manager Arne Slot wants to secure his team for a hectic 2025, he will focus primarily on midfielders.
Other targets are Danish youngster Morten Frendrup and Torino’s Samuele Ricci as the Reds aim to contend for Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and domestic cup tournaments.
If Liverpool is out of the race for Zubimendi at least for now, the search for midfield reinforcements is far from over.
With the upcoming January transfer period, more action will be required by the club to acquire players who will help achieve the club’s pending tournaments within the next few months.
