Nico Williams Transfer News

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to make a serious move for Athletic Club star Nico Williams in a deal that could be worth around €75 million.

Despite signing a new long-term contract in Bilbao, speculation over the Spanish winger’s future refuses to fade, with the Reds now emerging as frontrunners for his signature

According to a report from Fichajes, Liverpool have rekindled their pursuit of Williams and are eager to secure a deal ahead of next summer’s FIFA World Cup.

The 23-year-old is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers, combining pace, creativity, and technical quality to devastating effect.

Williams has been a key figure for Athletic Club since breaking into the senior side in 2021, developing into a cornerstone of their attack.

His performances in La Liga and on the international stage with Spain have drawn attention from across Europe, including Premier League heavyweights and several top clubs in Spain.

Although Williams recently signed a new 10-year contract with Athletic Club, the deal includes a €90 million release clause.

This clause gives potential suitors a clear valuation target, though Liverpool are reportedly hoping to negotiate a slightly lower fee of around €75 million.

Why Liverpool Want Nico Williams

Liverpool’s renewed interest in the Spanish international stems from a desire to refresh their frontline and maintain long-term competitiveness.

While Mohamed Salah, Luis Díaz, and Diogo Jota continue to deliver, the club’s recruitment team, led by sporting director Richard Hughes, is actively scouting for successors who can bring dynamism and versatility to the attack.

Williams’ direct running, balance between wide play and inside movement, and ability to beat defenders one-on-one make him an ideal fit for Jürgen Klopp’s high-intensity system.

His work rate and defensive discipline also align well with Liverpool’s pressing philosophy — a trait that has reportedly impressed the club’s analysts.

Athletic Club’s Stance and Possible Sale

Athletic Club remain publicly calm over the situation and insist that Williams is part of their long-term vision, especially with Champions League football returning to San Mamés.

However, behind the scenes, there is a growing sense that a lucrative offer could test their resolve — particularly given recent discussions about the player’s recurring injury concerns.

Club officials are aware that his transfer value could peak within the next 12 months, especially if he stars for Spain at the 2026 World Cup. As a result, there are internal talks about whether to consider a sale sooner rather than later.

Liverpool Aiming to Move Quickly

Liverpool’s plan is to act decisively before the World Cup, avoiding a potential bidding war that could drive his price even higher.

Other European giants, including Barcelona and Manchester City, are monitoring the situation, but the Merseyside club hope to capitalise on their early interest and long-standing admiration for the player.

A deal in the region of €75 million would still represent a major investment, but for Liverpool, it could be viewed as a strategic move to secure one of Europe’s most complete young wingers before his value skyrockets.

For now, all eyes are on Anfield’s recruitment team and whether they can convince both Williams and Athletic Club to greenlight one of the Premier League’s biggest moves ahead of next summer.
