Liverpool’s defensive woes have deepened after their fourth consecutive defeat, this time against Manchester United at Anfield. The Reds have looked shaky at the back throughout this poor run, with several key defenders struggling for form.
Virgil van Dijk’s performances have dipped sharply compared to last season, while Ibrahima Konaté’s future remains uncertain. Joe Gomez provides cover, but the lack of reliable depth has become a growing concern for Arne Slot.
According to Mark Brus via Sport Illustrated, Liverpool are preparing to make a move for Newcastle United’s Sven Botman next summer.
The 25-year-old Dutchman has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent centre-backs since joining Newcastle and could be a key target if Liverpool decide to reinforce their defensive ranks.
Marc Guehi remains the Reds’ top option, but with more than one new signing likely needed, Botman has emerged as a serious candidate.
Bargain Opportunity for the Reds
Botman’s current deal at St James’ Park runs until June 2027, and Newcastle are already in discussions with his camp over a possible renewal.
However, interest from a top club like Liverpool could sway the defender’s decision, especially if the Magpies miss out on European football.

The Dutch international is valued at around £35 million, and Newcastle could consider selling if they fail to secure a new contract with him by next summer. For a player of his age and quality, that fee represents solid value in today’s market.
At nearly two metres tall, Botman brings immense physical presence and is dominant in aerial duels.
His left-footed ability also adds balance to any backline, giving Liverpool a different dynamic when building from the back. He can even cover as a left-back when needed, a versatility that could prove valuable to Slot.
However, one complication could be Newcastle’s tense relationship with Liverpool following past transfer dealings, including the Alexander Isak saga. The Magpies may demand a premium fee if Liverpool come calling.
Even so, if the Reds are serious about rebuilding their defensive core, Sven Botman could be the commanding presence they need to restore stability at the back.
