Andy Robertson

Liverpool vice-captain Andy Robertson has revealed that he gave “serious consideration” to leaving Anfield in the summer after his long-standing place in the starting XI came under threat.

Kerkez arrival sparks uncertainty

The Scotland international endured one of his least convincing campaigns last season, and his future was cast into doubt when Liverpool splashed £40 million to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

The Hungarian full-back was quickly installed as Arne Slot’s first-choice left-back, leaving Robertson watching from the bench in all four of Liverpool’s opening fixtures this season.

Atlético Madrid were reportedly among the clubs monitoring his situation, with whispers suggesting Robertson was keen on a move to the Spanish capital.

Though a transfer never materialised, the defender has now admitted that he questioned whether his future still lay at Anfield.

Andy Robertson on his decision

Speaking while on international duty with Scotland, the 31-year-old opened up about his thought process:

“That was the first summer that I’ve had to think about my future. It’s always been nailed on where I’m going to be and what my position looks like. So I had to consider things. Ultimately we came to the conclusion that our hearts were still at Liverpool. We committed to that and it’s a decision I don’t regret.”

Robertson also conceded that adapting to life on the bench has been difficult:

“I’m used to playing pretty much every game. I’ve had eight years at Liverpool where—apart from at the beginning—I’ve always been a starter. Obviously in the first few games this season I’ve found myself on the bench. But I had time to think over the summer about what I wanted. I made a decision and I still believe if I keep doing what I’m doing, I’ll play a lot of games for club and country.”

A battle for his Liverpool future

Robertson’s introduction off the bench on the opening day against Bournemouth did little to help his cause, as he failed to contain Antoine Semenyo, who struck twice in the visitors’ surprise victory.

Since then, Kerkez has retained his place while Slot has kept faith with youth and freshness in defence.

At 31, Robertson is entering the twilight of his career, but his experience and leadership still make him a valuable squad figure.

The coming months will determine whether he can reclaim his starting role—or whether this summer was the beginning of the end of an era.
