Liverpool are reported to have finally triggered an interest in Real Madrid defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni by submitting €50m (£43m) bid for him, according to Spanish media.
The 24-year-old Frenchman, who was once regarded as a near certainty for a starting role under new coach Carlo Ancelotti, seems to have fallen down the squad hierarchy at the Bernabeu.
This development has attracted the interest of Liverpool besides Manchester City, who is also intending to sign his talent.
Aurelien Tchouameni is considered one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe, hence clubs are interested in acquiring him.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who joined the Reds last summer, is said to be keen on strengthening the squad, particularly in the midfield.
While Ryan Gravenberch has been a standout this campaign season, Slot wants competition and a possible heir for Fabinho in the number six role.
How Aurelien Tchouameni made the list
Playing in front of the back four, Tchouameni has proved to be very good at anticipating danger, unsettling attacks, or even intercepting them to demonstrate the kind of attributes that looked like those of Fabinho at his best at Anfield.
Stefan Bienkowski, a journalist, has called him world-class smart, always ball winning and very composed. While Gravenberch is passionate about carrying out attacks with pace and enthusiasm, Tchouameni is a much more physical player.
Slot could just use the two in tandem – Gravenberch is almost impossible to press up high while Tchouameni is a physical presence and a robust tackler.
These two could provide the same chemistry as was last seen when Fabinho contributed to Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League titles.
Fabinho went on the decline, which would then completely coincide with Liverpool under Klopp’s reign in the 2022/23 campaign.
Since then, the club has looked to strengthen its midfield through the likes of Gravenberch and Wataru Endo, and integrating Tchouameni will certainly bring that steel and technicality.
Nevertheless, Arsenal and Manchester City are also interested in the player, making the signing of Tchouameni this winter a game-changer for Liverpool.
His signing might be instrumental in the Reds’ return to domestic supremacy and a credible premiership title chase under the guidance of Slot.
