Frenkie De Jong Hints At Barcelona Exit, Cites On-Field Frustrations And Trophy Ambitions

The situation of Frenkie De Jong is quite different, as he has remained consistently loyal to Barcelona and has specified the conditions under which he might consider leaving the team.

The Dutch midfielder joined Barcelona from Ajax in the summer of 2019 for £62 million. While he has been a regular starter for the team, he has struggled to replicate the dominating performances he delivered for the Dutch national team.

De Jong made the comments after last year a difficult year in 2022, Barcelona was allegedly trying to sell him to Manchester United.

At the time, Erik ten Hag, who joined United as a manager after being a part of Ajax as a coach with De Jong, wanted to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford.

Looking back, in an interview with NOS, De Jong said, “Manchester United talked to Barcelona [in that summer] even when I wanted to continue [at Ajax]. It put the club in an awkward position. They could sell me for a big fee and wanted to do so, but I opted to remain there.

But it seems he has changed his view slightly on the matter. De Jong agreed with these assessments when he spoke to Voetbal International recently and proffered two major reasons why he is being more than ever careful in deciding on where to relocate.

‘Sometimes people think I want to spend my entire life at Barcelona because life after football is so amazing here,’ explained De Jong. “And it is good, but events on the pitch remain paramount.”

While Barcelona struggles through financial issues and inability to remain relevant in the competitive world, De Jong’s position in the club is still under question.
