Liverpool’s dramatic late push to secure Marc Guéhi has ended in frustration after their £35 million deal with Crystal Palace collapsed on deadline day.

The Reds had prepared every step for the England defender’s arrival, even submitting a deal sheet to gain two extra hours past the 7pm cut-off, but Palace’s failure to finalise replacements ultimately blocked the transfer.

Marc Guéhi had completed a medical in London and was ready to seal the move, yet Palace’s plans to bring in defensive cover fell apart.

The Eagles confirmed the signing of French youngster Jaydee Canvot on a four-year deal, though the 19-year-old is viewed as one for the future rather than a direct successor.

A separate loan move for Brighton’s Igor Julio also collapsed late in the day, leaving Palace unwilling to part with their captain without sufficient reinforcements.

Liverpool may return in January

The collapse ensures Oliver Glasner retains his key defender, with Palace prioritising squad stability over short-term financial gain.

For Liverpool, however, Guéhi’s future remains a live situation. Attention now turns to the January 2026 transfer window, when the Reds could make another attempt to land him.

That scenario would force Liverpool to weigh up whether paying a reduced fee in winter makes sense, especially as Guéhi would be available as a free agent just months later.

Real Madrid’s decision to pay for Trent Alexander-Arnold shortly before his contract expiry has been highlighted as a recent example of such a calculated gamble, particularly if Liverpool find themselves in a title race and desperate for defensive reinforcements.

Palace, meanwhile, face their own dilemma. By rejecting £35 million now, they risk losing Guéhi for less in January or even for nothing the following summer. Much depends on whether the defender chooses to extend his contract, something he has so far shown little interest in pursuing.

Liverpool’s interest is unlikely to fade, but as deadline day has shown, Palace’s resolve and the timing of replacements could once again dictate how and when Guéhi’s next move materialises.
