The Blues were previously keen on the Portuguese full-back in the summer but were deterred by Lazio’s £43 million valuation. With the Serie A side now struggling financially, a lower fee could bring the 25-year-old within reach.

His overlapping runs and willingness to drive into space could complement Chelsea’s wide play. Defensively, he remains a work in progress but offers good aerial presence and physicality.

If acquired at a reduced price, Tavares would represent smart business for Chelsea — a solid deputy to Cucurella and a player with room to grow under Maresca’s system.
