Andrey Santos has revealed that his determination to represent Brazil at next summer’s World Cup was the decisive factor behind turning down a big-money move to Saudi Arabia during the transfer window.
World Cup Ambition Over Riches
The Chelsea midfielder admitted that lucrative offers did arrive late in the summer, with clubs from the Middle East circling and even Arsenal reportedly weighing up an approach.
However, the 20-year-old was clear in his response: his focus is firmly on giving himself the best chance of making Brazil’s World Cup squad.
“The offer did arrive, but I immediately declined because of my dream and main goal, which is the World Cup,” Santos told Trivela. “I know that being at Chelsea and in the Premier League gives me better chances than in Saudi Arabia. That was the main factor in my response to them.”
Making His Mark at Chelsea
Santos has started to carve out a role for himself at Stamford Bridge. After impressing on loan in France last season with 11 goals in 34 appearances, he has now broken into Chelsea’s first team.
He featured at the Club World Cup and has already made three appearances this term, showing glimpses of his versatility.
While he identifies as a defensive midfielder by trade, Santos is comfortable further forward too.
“I really enjoy playing defensive midfielder, I even think it’s my main position, because I grew up as a defensive midfielder,” he explained. “At Chelsea, I play a bit further forward, but I feel comfortable playing in both positions.”
Focused on the Future
By rejecting the financial lure of Saudi Arabia, Santos has underlined his commitment to both Chelsea and his international ambitions.
With the World Cup on the horizon, staying in the Premier League looks like the ideal platform to showcase his ability and strengthen his case for a Brazil call-up.
