Deco Says No To Joshua Kimmich – Barcelona mostly concentrated on ensuring the long-term futures of their present stars in the January transfer window, not bothered about big announcements.
The club’s strategy was driven by an economic crunch and an inflated salary bill that put considerable pressure on their balance sheet.
Rather than chasing new big-name additions, Barcelona opted to negotiate with players already at the club. Barca is ensuring stability amid challenging financial circumstances.
Interestingly, according to Diario SPORT, Barcelona were not entirely out of the market for big signings.
The club was reportedly offered the chance to acquire on free transfer both Joshua Kimmich and Virgil van Dijk. The two names that could have significantly bolstered their squad.
The time seemed ideal for a perhaps cheap trade given Kimmich’s contract at Bayern Munich and van Dijk’s at Liverpool about to expire at the end of the season.
Deco Rejected The Idea Of Signing Joshua Kimmich And Virgil Van Dijk
However, Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, ultimately rejected these opportunities.
The decision was driven by a clear strategic shift. Rather than investing in players who are in the latter stages of their careers.
Deco is focused on building a squad with younger talent and long-term profit potential.
Although the club still rates Kimmich highly as a player, his profile does not align with their current ambition.
Furthermore, given an already strong defensive team, it was considered pointless to acquire van Dijk.
Barcelona’s backline is expected to receive further reinforcement with the free transfer of Jonathan Tah, whose arrival will expand the squad’s defensive depth.
In this context, signing an established veteran like van Dijk would have provided sufficient added value.
In summary, while the prospect of adding world-class defenders like Kimmich and van Dijk might have been enticing.
Barcelona’s long-term vision and financial strategy led them to prioritize youthful potential and sustainable investments over immediate star power.
