Manchester United are reportedly considering a surprise move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher as a potential replacement for academy product Kobbie Mainoo.
According to Football Insider, Ruben Amorim is open to reshaping his midfield in January, with Gallagher seen as an ideal addition to bring more energy and aggression to the middle of the park.
Amorim has come under fire for his midfield selections this season, with fans growing frustrated at the limited minutes handed to Mainoo.
The 19-year-old has mostly featured as a rotational option behind Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte. The report suggests that United’s pursuit of Gallagher could signal that Amorim views Mainoo as a long-term backup rather than a regular starter.
Conor Gallagher Situation at Atletico Madrid
Gallagher joined Atletico Madrid from Chelsea in 2025 but has struggled for consistent game time under Diego Simeone.

The England international has started only four of Atletico’s 12 matches this season, despite playing a major role last term with 47 appearances across all competitions.
Known for his high work rate, pressing intensity, and ability to arrive late in the box, Gallagher’s style differs significantly from Mainoo’s composed, ball-carrying approach.
While Mainoo excels in deep buildup and tempo control, Gallagher thrives as a box-to-box disruptor — a trait Amorim reportedly values for the more physical Premier League environment.
United’s Midfield Plans
Manchester United’s midfield overhaul continues to take shape, with Casemiro’s future uncertain and Ugarte yet to convince since his arrival. Gallagher, 25, could provide the dynamism Amorim desires, though his tendency to push forward might require tactical adjustments.
Atletico are said to value Gallagher at around £45 million, and United’s growing financial flexibility could make a January bid feasible.
Whether this signals the end of Mainoo’s first-team ambitions remains to be seen, but Amorim’s intent to bring in Gallagher underscores his desire for proven, high-intensity midfield options.
