Liverpool could be heading for a crucial summer in 2026, with several senior players approaching the end of their contracts.
Among the most pressing cases is that of Ibrahima Konate, who joined the club from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million. The French defender’s deal runs out in two years, and unless renewed soon, he could leave Anfield for free.
Konate has been a consistent performer when fit, forming a solid partnership with Virgil van Dijk. However, with his contract situation unresolved, the club’s hierarchy faces a major decision.
Losing him without compensation would be a blow, particularly as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly monitoring the situation.
Andy Robertson Future in Doubt Amid Atletico Interest
Fellow defender Andy Robertson is in a similar position. The Scotland captain’s contract also expires in 2026, and his long-term future on Merseyside looks uncertain.
Once a mainstay at left-back, Robertson has fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40 million.

Though Robertson has reclaimed his place at times due to Kerkez’s inconsistency, Liverpool appear to be looking toward a younger defensive setup. At 31, the defender may seek a new challenge, with Atletico Madrid showing strong interest ahead of next summer.
Robertson’s legacy at Anfield remains significant. Since arriving from Hull City in 2017, he has made 348 appearances and helped the club win the Premier League, Champions League, and FIFA Club World Cup, among other honours.
He was also named vice-captain last summer, highlighting his influence in the dressing room.
With both Konate and Robertson nearing the final stages of their contracts, sporting director Richard Hughes faces tough renewal talks.
Liverpool will need to decide whether to commit to experience or continue their shift toward a younger defensive core — a decision that could shape the next phase of their rebuild.
