Manchester City are reportedly preparing a major move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson as Pep Guardiola looks to future-proof his midfield amid ongoing concerns over Rodri’s fitness
According to a report from the Express, Manchester City are readying a £75 million bid for Anderson, who has been one of Nottingham Forest’s standout players this season.
The 22-year-old’s performances have earned him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, where he has impressed enough to become a genuine contender for a starting role ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Forest value their star midfielder at around £70 million, and City’s offer is expected to meet or exceed that figure. Chelsea are also reportedly monitoring the situation, but Guardiola’s side are believed to hold the financial and sporting advantage in the race.
Anderson has made nine appearances across all competitions so far this season, emerging as a key figure for Forest. His calmness in possession, tactical intelligence, and ability to dictate play under pressure make him an ideal stylistic fit for Guardiola’s system.
Many within the club view him as the perfect long-term heir to Rodri — capable of blending defensive discipline with progressive passing.
United’s Focus Elsewhere Could Benefit City
Manchester United have also been linked with Anderson in recent months, but their focus appears to be shifting toward another young English midfielder — Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace.

Reports suggest that United are prioritising a £60 million move for Wharton, who is viewed by manager Ruben Amorim as the ideal partner for Bruno Fernandes in the double pivot.
The Red Devils’ interest in Anderson has therefore cooled, potentially clearing the path for City to advance their pursuit of the Nottingham Forest star without major domestic competition.
Elliot Anderson Rise and Potential Fit at City
Elliot Anderson’s rapid rise over the past year has been remarkable. After joining Forest from Newcastle United, he has developed into one of the Premier League’s most composed and intelligent midfielders.
His ability to receive under pressure, play progressive passes through tight spaces, and maintain defensive shape makes him an archetypal Guardiola player.
Guardiola has long prioritised midfield control, and with Rodri’s ongoing injury concerns and Kalvin Phillips’ exit, Anderson could represent a strategic signing that ensures continuity in City’s midfield dominance.
If Manchester City do complete the move, it would not only secure one of England’s brightest midfield talents but also underline their intent to stay ahead of the curve in squad evolution — a hallmark of the Guardiola era.
For now, all eyes will be on whether City formalise their interest with an official bid in January or wait until the summer to make their move, depending on Rodri’s recovery and Forest’s stance on a mid-season sale.
