Kobbie Mainoo Transfer News

Napoli are reportedly growing confident about their chances of signing Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo on loan in the January transfer window.

The Serie A champions believe United are open to the idea of a temporary move, though only under one strict condition — that any deal must not include an option to buy.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli have revived their pursuit of the England international after previously holding talks with United during the summer.

The deal failed to progress at the time, as the Italian club shifted their focus elsewhere following Romelu Lukaku’s injury. However, with Mainoo’s limited minutes this season, Antonio Conte’s side are ready to return with a fresh proposal.

United’s Stance and Napoli’s Optimism

Manchester United are reportedly willing to sanction a short-term move for Mainoo to ensure the youngster gains consistent first-team experience, but the club view him as a long-term cornerstone of their midfield.

As such, United will only consider a straight loan — no buy or future purchase clause — to protect their investment and the player’s development path.

Napoli, meanwhile, are said to be optimistic that an agreement can be reached on those terms.

Conte is a known admirer of Mainoo’s technical intelligence and work rate, and sees him as a perfect addition to a midfield that requires both dynamism and composure.

Kobbie Mainoo Struggles for Game Time

Since Ruben Amorim took charge at Old Trafford, Mainoo has struggled for consistent minutes.

The 20-year-old has yet to start a Premier League game this season, with Bruno Fernandes often deployed in a deeper midfield role.

His only full appearance came in United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, further highlighting his current lack of opportunities.

After an outstanding breakout campaign that earned him a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad, Mainoo now faces the challenge of maintaining momentum.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, regular playing time will be essential if he is to remain in Gareth Southgate’s plans.

Amorim’s Faith in the Youngster

Despite his current rotational role, Amorim has publicly backed Mainoo to succeed in the long run. Speaking last month, the Portuguese manager said:

“I believe a lot in Kobbie, but some of you think that Kobbie Mainoo is already done. I think he can do much better. He can improve in a lot. And sometimes I think for some guys it’s enough — for him, it’s not enough. Maybe it’s not fair, but I think I’m helping Kobbie Mainoo.”

His comments underline a belief in the player’s potential, even as he pushes for higher standards.

What’s Next

Napoli’s renewed interest presents a potential win-win scenario. Mainoo could gain valuable playing time in Serie A, while United would retain full control over his future.

With the January window fast approaching, both clubs are expected to continue discussions, though United’s refusal to include any purchase option could yet prove a sticking point.

For now, the ball is in United’s court — and Mainoo’s development remains firmly part of their long-term project.
