Liverpool may have to wait until the transfer window reopens, but preparations are already underway as the club looks to fix one of its biggest weaknesses — the defence.
Despite an ambitious summer of signings, the Reds’ season hasn’t gone as planned, with three consecutive defeats exposing cracks that manager Arne Slot can no longer ignore.
According to reports, Liverpool have reactivated their interest in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, with sources confirming that the club is “doing everything” to bring the England international to Anfield.
Journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that talks are ongoing as Liverpool push hard to get a deal in place ahead of the January transfer window.
Defensive woes force Liverpool’s hand
The Reds’ struggles at the back have been a recurring theme this season.
With injuries, inconsistent performances, and tactical adjustments under Slot’s new system, Liverpool have looked far from the defensively solid unit that helped them reclaim the Premier League crown.
The backline has been porous, leaving Alisson exposed far too often, and prompting urgent discussions within the club about strengthening the defence.
Marc Guehi, who has been a standout performer for Crystal Palace since his arrival from Chelsea, has long been admired by Liverpool’s scouting team.
His composure on the ball, positional intelligence, and leadership qualities make him an ideal candidate for Slot’s setup — a system that demands defenders comfortable both in possession and under pressure.

Liverpool initially tried to sign Guehi during the summer, but the move collapsed late in negotiations, leaving the Reds short of defensive reinforcements.
Even then, sources close to the club insisted that they planned to revisit the deal — and it now appears those plans are accelerating.
Competition heating up for Marc Guehi signature
Liverpool aren’t alone in their pursuit. Barcelona have also registered strong interest in the 24-year-old, with sporting director Deco viewing him as a long-term replacement for veteran defenders in Hansi Flick’s backline.
Bayern Munich are monitoring the situation closely and have already held preliminary talks with Guehi’s representatives.
To complicate matters further, Guehi is reportedly waiting to see whether Real Madrid enter the race, as the Spanish giants continue to assess their defensive options following injuries in their squad.
Despite the mounting competition, Liverpool remain optimistic. The club reportedly has an understanding with the player’s camp from earlier discussions, and they hope that could give them an edge when the window opens.
