Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to extend Rodrigo Bentancur’s stay in North London, with The Athletic reporting that the midfielder is close to agreeing fresh terms beyond 2026.
The move underlines Spurs’ drive for stability under Thomas Frank, as they look to secure a spine that delivered long-awaited silverware last season.
Bentancur’s influence in midfield
Since his arrival from Juventus in January 2022, Bentancur has developed into one of Tottenham’s most dependable players.
His 122 appearances are especially significant given he spent nine months out with an ACL injury in 2023. That setback could have stalled his career, but instead, his return became a story of resilience.
Last season, Bentancur was central to Spurs’ Europa League triumph. He featured in every knockout tie and played the full 90 minutes in the final against Manchester United.
For a club that had gone 17 years without a major trophy, his control and composure in midfield proved decisive.
Frank’s backing
Thomas Frank has made no secret of his admiration for the Uruguay international.
Speaking earlier this season, he said: “I’m very happy with Rodri. He’s been a very good player for us, a top professional in every aspect. I’m happy with him, he’s happy with being here. I know that for a fact. Let’s see what’s going to happen in the future.”
With nine appearances already this campaign, starting eight of the club’s ten matches, Bentancur’s consistency highlights why Spurs are so keen to secure his future.
Contract picture at Spurs
Bentancur’s expected renewal comes on the back of Cristian Romero’s four-year extension in August, reinforcing Tottenham’s intention to keep their core group intact.
The midfield remains an area of ongoing adjustment, however. Joao Palhinha’s loan arrival from Bayern Munich includes a €30 million option to buy, while Yves Bissouma’s contract is due to expire next summer.
Injuries and off-field issues have clouded his situation, leaving question marks over his place in Frank’s long-term plans.
For Tottenham, keeping Bentancur represents both ambition and stability.
Despite controversy last year when he was suspended by the FA for a racist remark towards Son Heung-min, an incident he apologised for the Uruguayan has rebuilt trust with consistent professionalism on and off the pitch.
Building for the future
Tottenham’s progress under Frank has been defined by blending smart recruitment with careful retention. Having finally ended their trophy drought, the club is determined to avoid regression.
Securing Bentancur’s commitment not only protects a key performer but also sends a clear message of continuity in the squad’s development.
For a player who has battled adversity and risen to the occasion on Europe’s biggest stage, a new deal at Spurs feels both a reward and an investment in the club’s next phase.
