Manchester United’s long-standing interest in Federico Valverde could finally gain momentum after reports in Spain suggested Real Madrid are now open to selling the midfielder.
The Uruguayan has been on United’s radar for several years, and the latest stance from the Bernabeu represents a shift from the club’s previously firm resistance.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, relayed by Manchester Evening News, United are prepared to table an offer in the region of £87 million for the 27-year-old.
While Valverde remains valued by manager Xabi Alonso, senior figures in Madrid are said to be increasingly receptive to bids, viewing him as important but not untouchable.
Valverde has made more than 250 appearances for Los Blancos, earning a reputation as one of Europe’s most industrious midfielders. His ability to play both centrally and at right-back adds to his appeal, making him a versatile option for any top side.
United continue search for midfield reinforcements
Manchester United’s midfield continues to draw scrutiny, with manager Ruben Amorim keen to strengthen despite summer additions.
The Portuguese coach favours players who combine tireless work rates with defensive discipline — qualities Valverde has consistently demonstrated in his career.
Amorim’s system, built on aggressive pressing and the use of adventurous wing-backs, demands midfielders capable of covering large areas of the pitch.
Valverde’s energy, tackling ability, and tactical intelligence make him a natural fit for this style of play.
The 27-year-old’s numbers from the 2024-25 campaign underline his all-round effectiveness.
He registered 11 goals and eight assists across competitions, maintained a 90 per cent passing accuracy, and contributed heavily in defensive phases with 52 tackles and 73 interceptions.
In the current season, he has yet to score but already has three assists in eight matches while improving his passing success rate to 91 per cent.
Madrid weigh up financial and sporting considerations
For Real Madrid, the decision to soften their stance reflects both sporting and financial factors.
With a deep squad that includes younger midfield options such as Eduardo Camavinga, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Arda Güler, the club may view Valverde as expendable if a significant bid arrives.
At 27, he remains in his prime, meaning Madrid could command a premium fee without compromising the long-term balance of their midfield.
While Xabi Alonso continues to value Valverde’s versatility, the board’s openness suggests they would not block a sale if United meet their valuation.
For United, this potential opening in negotiations could prove pivotal.
If Amorim remains in charge long enough to oversee another transfer window, Valverde is exactly the type of player who could address long-standing issues in the middle of the pitch.
His blend of creativity, defensive work, and big-game experience makes him one of the more realistic top-tier targets available in 2026.
