West Ham United are reportedly preparing a formal offer to sign Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli when the transfer window reopens in January, according to Italian outlet Tuttojuve.
Despite strengthening with the summer signing of Mateus Fernandes from Southampton, midfield concerns continue to linger at the London Stadium.
Graham Potter has struggled to find the right balance in the centre of the park, and the lack of a commanding presence has become a recurring issue since his appointment. The Hammers now see Locatelli as a player who could solve those problems.
Manuel Locatelli emerges as West Ham’s top target
The Italy international has been on West Ham’s radar for several years, with the club first monitoring him during his Sassuolo days.
After sealing a permanent move to Juventus in 2023, he became a key figure in Turin, impressing under Massimiliano Allegri and later Thiago Motta.
However, under newly appointed coach Igor Tudor, Locatelli has seen his playing time reduced, and Juventus are now reportedly open to selling him.
This shift has encouraged potential suitors, with West Ham, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers all monitoring the situation closely.
The Hammers are believed to be ahead of the pack and are readying an official bid to secure his signature in January. With his current market value estimated at around £26m, a deal could be within reach, especially as Juventus are no longer considering him untouchable.
Filling the void left by Declan Rice
West Ham have yet to truly replace Declan Rice, whose departure to Arsenal in 2023 left a significant hole in their midfield.
Locatelli, known for his passing range, tactical awareness and defensive work rate, could be the closest fit to restoring that presence.
For Potter, who is under pressure to steady results, the arrival of a midfielder of Locatelli’s calibre would represent a major boost.
His ability to dictate tempo and provide balance could be exactly what the Hammers need to climb higher in the Premier League table.
With interest from rival English clubs also growing, West Ham may have to act quickly and decisively if they want to win the race for the 27-year-old.
