Lionel Messi is on the verge of committing his future to Inter Miami, with ESPN reporting that the Argentine forward is close to agreeing a new multi-year contract.
Only final details remain before the deal is approved by Major League Soccer and announced publicly.
Focused on Miami despite speculation
Messi’s future had been the subject of speculation in recent months, with Saudi Arabian clubs reportedly interested in luring him away from MLS.
However, the 38-year-old appears determined to continue his career in Miami, where he has become the face of the league and a central figure in its global growth.
Impact since joining MLS
Messi moved to Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain in July 2023, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal set to expire on 31 December 2025. Since then, he has transformed the club’s fortunes on and off the pitch.
- 75 appearances
- 62 goals and 30 assists
- Two major trophies won
He inspired Miami to the inaugural Leagues Cup triumph in 2023, where he was both top scorer and best player, and followed up by leading the team to the Supporters’ Shield in 2024 after a record-breaking league campaign.
In 2025 alone, Messi has managed 28 goals and 12 assists in 36 appearances, underlining his enduring quality. His performances also helped Miami reach the round of 16 at the Club World Cup.
Building a Barcelona-style project in Miami
Messi’s arrival opened the door for a wave of former Barcelona teammates to join him in Florida. Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba have all signed, creating a core of experienced winners.
This summer, Inter Miami reinforced further by adding Atlético Madrid and Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul on loan with an option to buy, a move that strengthens Messi’s supporting cast.
Looking towards the 2026 World Cup
The new contract would keep Messi at the club beyond the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
While many believe the tournament could mark his international farewell, Messi has stopped short of committing, saying that his decision to represent Argentina will depend on his fitness.
For now, Inter Miami are set to remain Messi’s home, as the legendary forward looks to add more silverware in MLS while preparing for what may be the final chapter of his extraordinary career
