Arsenal fans finally got a glimpse of Piero Hincapie in action as the Ecuadorian defender made his long-awaited debut in the 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés.
Signed from Bayer Leverkusen on deadline day, the 22-year-old came off the bench in the 91st minute and looked assured in his brief cameo, wasting no time in showing his composure on the ball.
Patience rewarded for Piero Hincapie
Hincapie had been an unused substitute during Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, but Mikel Arteta handed him his debut in Bilbao to help see out a narrow win.
Despite only playing a few minutes, he impressed with his positioning and calmness under pressure, leaving supporters and teammates alike excited about his potential impact.
Martinelli’s praise
Following the match, Hincapie posted on Instagram: “Everything has a beginning. Good evening. We continue.”
His international teammate and fellow Gunner Gabriel Martinelli quickly responded in the comments, calling him “Maquina” — or “machine” — underlining the respect he’s already earned within the squad.
Path to more minutes
Arteta is expected to rotate heavily across four competitions this season, meaning Hincapie will get more chances to prove himself.
A first start could come as soon as next week in the Carabao Cup against Port Vale, where a strong showing could see him climb the pecking order.
Fierce competition for places
Breaking into Arsenal’s first-choice back line will not be straightforward.
William Saliba and Gabriel remain Arteta’s preferred pairing, while summer signing Cristhian Mosquera is also pushing for regular minutes.
Still, Hincapie’s versatility, left-footed balance, and ability to play in a high defensive line give him qualities Arteta values highly.
If his early impression is anything to go by, the Ecuadorian may not be waiting long before becoming a bigger part of Arsenal’s defensive plans.
