Manchester United’s long-running search for a midfielder this summer was complicated not only by their own priorities but also by Arsenal’s business in Portugal.
Attacking overhaul took precedence
Ruben Amorim and United’s recruitment team made strengthening the attack their main mission this summer, with the arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Šeško and Bryan Mbeumo among others.
However, there was still an appetite to add at least one midfielder if the right opportunity arose.
United explored Carlos Baleba at Brighton and even made a late loan approach for Conor Gallagher at Atletico Madrid, but neither deal materialised.
Club insiders maintain that midfield reinforcements were never the No.1 priority, though planning is already underway to reshape that area of the squad in 2025.
Why Hjulmand was off limits
One name firmly on the radar was Morten Hjulmand of Sporting CP. The Denmark international fits Amorim’s style and impressed United scouts. According to Fabrizio Romano, United held “several meetings” about a possible move.
But any transfer hopes were killed the moment Arsenal secured Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting. The Portuguese club, unwilling to sanction the exit of another key starter in the same window, made it clear Hjulmand was not for sale under any circumstances.
What happens next
With that in mind, United will revisit the midfield market in 2025. Baleba remains the “dream” target, while Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace is also under consideration. Amorim may again push for Hjulmand if Sporting show any willingness to negotiate.
