Ben Chillwell

England international Ben Chilwell has completed a permanent switch from Chelsea to French side Strasbourg, signing a two-year contract as confirmed on Monday evening.

The fee has not been disclosed, but the move keeps the full-back within the BlueCo football network, the same consortium that owns both clubs.

Ben Chillwell, 28, joined Chelsea in 2020 from Leicester City and played a pivotal role in their Champions League-winning campaign the following year.

However, his opportunities dwindled in recent seasons, with just one appearance for the Blues last term before finishing the year on loan at Crystal Palace. He was part of the Palace squad that lifted the FA Cup, playing a key role in their successful run.

Fresh start for Ben Chilwell in Ligue 1 under Rosenior

The move to Strasbourg offers Chilwell the chance to revive his career in France’s top flight under English manager Liam Rosenior. The former Leicester man could even line up against Palace again, with the two clubs set to face each other in this season’s UEFA Conference League.

Chilwell has been capped 21 times by England but has not featured for the national side since March 2024. A strong run of form in Ligue 1 could put him back on Gareth Southgate’s radar as competition intensifies for defensive spots ahead of the next international cycle.

Strasbourg continue to benefit from their link with Chelsea, with several players already moving between the two clubs this year.

Mathis Amougou and Ishe Samuels-Smith joined from Stamford Bridge, while goalkeeper Mike Penders and highly-rated Ecuadorian prospect Kendry Páez arrived on loan.

Mamadou Sarr, meanwhile, was purchased by Chelsea and loaned back to the Alsace-based side.

For Chilwell, the transfer represents both a new challenge and a clean slate after a frustrating spell at Chelsea. Strasbourg will be hoping his experience and pedigree add stability to their defence as they look to make an impression in domestic and European competition this season.
