Manchester City are said to be interested in a January swoop for Lille striker Jonathan David in a bid to provide more cover to Haaland who has only been in poor form in the recent past.
The league defending champions have been extraordinarily poor this season especially in their recent 1-1 Boxing Day match against Everton.
Haaland, once the striker that other defenders feared the most in the league, left his mark on a blank penalty spot and has only netted six league goals since late August.
At least part of the problem for Haaland can be attributed to tiredness and lack of midfield support, as well as attacking substitution changes as a result of Julián Álvarez getting sold to Atlético Madrid in the summer.
Is Jonathan David A Good Replacement For Haaland?
It seems Pep Guardiola’s side is interested in solving this problem as we have seen that Jonathan David has caught their eye. The Lille striker has been in fine form scoring 11 goals in 12 league games this French season.
David, who is 24 years of age, is rated as one of the most promising young forwards in Europe. His conversion of opportunities, together with his mobility and creative passing, makes him the perfect partner for Erling Haaland.
The Canadian international also has a good track record of scoring goals in his national team scoring 31 goals in 59 matches, therefore confirming him as a real striker.
Introducing David would add more mobility up front for City. Haaland has been the main source of goals since joining the club and this arrival of David may free up Guardiola to have the Norwegian take a breather in some games.
It might also rejuvenate Haaland, who will most probably be sharp and ready to take charge in the second half of the season for City.
While it is realistic to expect David to alleviate all of City’s problems at once – the team’s defensive injuries and their problematic midfield are still genuine issues – his presence should at least add some much-needed spice to their attack.
Lille’s most important player, only 24 years old, can be considered a long-term solution for the team, which is an appealing characteristic for a club that wants to remain at the top of European football.
