In the summer of last year, Nico Williams from Athletic Club was the most popular player in the transfer window with big armies of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Currently 22 years old, the winger had his best 2023-24 season where he made 37 appearances and contributed to the success of Athletic Club during the Copa Del Rey.
Williams continued projecting himself as a gifted footballer who is instrumental in helping Spain’s team clinch the UEFA Euro 2024 trophy in Germany.
However, Williams has carried that impressive form into this season, scoring two goals and assisting in five of the 22 games he has played across all competitions.
Barcelona Still Has Interest In Nico Williams
Barcelona are still showing active interest in Williams, although much of his future depends on him as the contract comes with an option of a €58 million release clause.
Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Chelsea are among the premier league clubs that are observing him as a transfer target during the summer.
Still, other teams like Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing him, and Paris Saint-Germain especially is said to have discussed with him via his agents sometime in the last transfer season.
According to SPORT, Williams is expressing a strong preference for a move to the Catalan giants. Spanish journalist Toni Juanmartà notes that the winger is eager to wear the Blaugrana jersey and is open to interest from other clubs.
Barcelona recently received criticism from some club members after President Joan Laporta discussed the team’s financial status.
When asked how the club would have been able to register Williams had they signed him last summer, Laporta did not elaborate but was keen to underline the necessity of Barça to reinforce itself within the economic possibilities.
As the summer transfer window draws closer, Williams’s future is likely to be one of the biggest talking points of the season, with Barcelona facing intense competition for the signature of one of Europe’s promising youngsters.
