Tottenham Hotspur have reached a verbal agreement with Rodrigo Bentancur to extend his stay at the club.
Manager Thomas Frank is understood to have played a decisive role in pushing the deal over the line.
Bentancur, who joined Spurs from Juventus in January 2022, has become a key figure in midfield.
The 28-year-old has made 122 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists, and was instrumental in helping Tottenham lift the Europa League last season.
His current contract was due to expire at the end of the campaign, but that uncertainty has now been eased.
Frank’s influence on Rodrigo Bentancur future
Frank has been vocal about Bentancur’s importance since taking charge.
Speaking back in August, he said: “I was pretty sure he would be a key player [before I started working with him], so that’s not been a surprise. That’s a player, of course, I think is important for the future.”
Those words have now been backed up with action. According to TEAMtalk sources, Frank strongly advocated for Bentancur’s renewal and ensured negotiations were prioritised.
A verbal agreement is in place, and the final details are expected to be confirmed soon.
Strong start to the season
Bentancur has already featured nine times for Tottenham this season, as the north London club sit fourth in the Premier League table with 11 points from six matches.
Spurs also made a winning start to their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Villarreal before being held to a 2-2 draw by Bodo/Glimt in midweek.
Frank, meanwhile, has hinted at further transfer activity. He recently suggested Tottenham could revisit a move for a Bodo/Glimt star in January, having previously tried to sign the player during his time at Brentford.
TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Dean Jones has also reported that Spurs and Manchester United are currently leading the race for another midfielder, despite Fulham entering the chase for his signature.
