Real Madrid have developed a reputation for pulling off high-profile free transfers in recent years.
From Kylian Mbappé to David Alaba, Antonio Rüdiger and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Los Blancos have consistently secured world-class talent without paying transfer fees.
Now, Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano could be the next big name on that list.
The French international is entering the final year of his contract with Bayern, and according to MARCA, his representatives have already been in touch with Madrid to sound out potential interest in a summer 2026 move.
While the Spanish giants have other priorities for now, the door remains open should circumstances align.
Aside Dayot Upamecano, Konaté also on Madrid’s radar
Interestingly, Upamecano isn’t the only French centre-back being considered.
His international teammate Ibrahima Konaté, who is set to leave Liverpool when his deal expires in 2026, has also been linked with a switch to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Choosing between the two could present Xabi Alonso with a defining decision as he looks to build a new defensive core.
Upamecano’s story adds another twist. Many expected him to join Madrid four years ago after his breakout at RB Leipzig, only for Bayern Munich to swoop in and secure his signature.
His time in Germany began with some inconsistency, but under Vincent Kompany he has grown into a commanding figure at the heart of Bayern’s backline, making more than 150 appearances.
With David Alaba, Rüdiger, and Éder Militão all battling recurring injuries, Real Madrid will almost certainly explore defensive reinforcements next summer.
Landing Upamecano for free would represent another masterstroke in the transfer market, but Konaté’s availability ensures that the decision is anything but straightforward.
