Manchester United are reportedly planning to open contract discussions with Lisandro Martinez despite the defender’s difficult run of injuries.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that the club “will try to accelerate” negotiations as they look to secure the long-term future of one of their most important players.

Martinez joined United from Ajax in 2022 in a £55 million deal and has quickly established himself as a key figure in the squad. His current contract runs until 2027, with an option to extend by another year, potentially keeping him at Old Trafford until 2028.

Injury struggles overshadow progress

The Argentine has endured a torrid time with fitness over the past two seasons, missing 86 matches due to multiple setbacks.

A cruciate knee ligament injury in February was the most serious blow, following earlier issues with his foot, knee and calf that kept him sidelined for months.

Despite this, when available, Martinez is regarded as United’s most reliable defender. His ability to dominate duels, read the game, and build play from deep makes him perfectly suited to Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Club faces a big decision

Awarding a fresh contract at this stage could be seen as a gamble, with Martinez yet to prove he can deliver a full injury-free season.

However, United remain convinced of his value to the squad and hope that his imminent return will provide Amorim with a huge boost.

The 27-year-old is expected to make his comeback soon, and if he can rediscover his best form and fitness, his renewal may become less of a risk and more of a necessity.
