Manchester United are reportedly ready to submit a £60 million bid for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, as they look to fend off interest from Real Madrid, according to reports from Fichajes.
The Red Devils have identified Wharton as a top target after missing out on several midfield options during the summer transfer window.
Despite heavy investment in attack, manager Ruben Amorim remains keen to strengthen his midfield, which has struggled for balance and consistency so far this season.
United Step Up Their Interest
Manchester United were close to securing a midfielder in the closing days of the summer window but were frustrated by inflated price tags.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba was considered, but his £115 million valuation ruled out any deal, while attempts to bring in Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher on loan also failed to materialise.
Now, the club are said to have turned their full attention to Wharton and are willing to test Crystal Palace’s resolve with a £60 million offer in January.

However, Palace reportedly value the 21-year-old at more than £80 million and are in no rush to sell, especially after his rapid rise since joining from Blackburn Rovers earlier this year.
Wharton’s Rise at Crystal Palace
Since arriving at Selhurst Park in January 2024, Wharton has become one of the Premier League’s most exciting young midfielders.
His composure, tactical awareness, and technical quality have made him a standout performer for Oliver Glasner’s side.
The Englishman averages 4.5 ball recoveries per match and wins nearly 60 percent of his ground duels, showing both defensive resilience and composure under pressure.
However, his greatest strength lies in dictating play from deep, using his passing range to launch quick counter-attacks and control the rhythm of the game.
At just 21, Wharton has already established himself as a key player for Palace, and his performances have caught the eye of several European giants, including Real Madrid.
Battle Between Manchester United and Real Madrid
Real Madrid view Wharton as a long-term successor to their current midfield stars and see him as a potential marquee signing for the future.
However, Manchester United hope their financial muscle and Premier League familiarity will give them the edge in the race.
United’s hierarchy are confident that a move back to the North West could appeal to Wharton, who came through the academy ranks at Blackburn Rovers before his move to London.
The midfielder’s connection to the region could play a decisive role if both clubs make formal approaches next year.
Looking Ahead
While Manchester United believe a £60 million offer could tempt Palace to negotiate, the Eagles’ valuation of more than £80 million suggests a deal in January may be unlikely.
A summer transfer, however, appears more realistic if United decide to meet the club’s asking price.
Wharton’s development continues to impress, and his blend of defensive control and creative distribution makes him a natural fit for Amorim’s vision at Old Trafford.
Whether United move decisively in January or wait until the end of the season, it’s clear that Adam Wharton has emerged as one of English football’s brightest midfield prospects — and one whose future could soon lie at the heart of a major transfer battle.
