Manchester United are preparing to reignite their pursuit of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, putting them on a direct collision course with rivals Liverpool.

United have shown interest in the England international before but previously refused to meet Everton’s valuation.

Now, with Harry Maguire nearing the end of his contract, Branthwaite has emerged as United’s top target to lead their defence into the future.

Maguire, who turns 33 in March, is out of contract at the end of the season. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is not expected to offer an extension, making defensive reinforcements a priority for manager Ruben Amorim.

Branthwaite is under contract with Everton until 2030. United could look to test the club’s resolve in January with a bid in the region of £65 million.

Liverpool are also monitoring the situation closely. However, it remains uncertain whether Branthwaite would consider making such a controversial switch across Merseyside.

Amorim Planning for Change

United’s interest in Branthwaite is also fuelled by concerns over Lisandro Martinez’s long-term fitness. The Argentine has struggled with injuries, leaving Amorim determined to add a reliable option to his defensive line.

At 23, Branthwaite is regarded as one of England’s brightest prospects. He already has one senior cap to his name and could be in contention for Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad next summer, provided England secure qualification.
