AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan looks destined for a Premier League switch, with Chelsea increasingly confident of securing his signature ahead of rivals Manchester United.
The French international’s contract runs out in June 2026, and while Milan may attempt to cash in during January, the expectation is that he will depart as a free agent next summer.
Chelsea already have contract agreement
According to TBR Football, Chelsea reached an agreement on personal terms with Maignan as far back as earlier this year, and remain confident that this will give them the edge over Manchester United.
The Blues had been close to signing him before the Club World Cup, only for talks with Milan over a transfer fee to collapse.
With Milan reluctant to lose such a key player for nothing, there remains a possibility of a discounted deal in the winter window. However, Chelsea are prepared to wait until the summer to finalise the move.
Sanchez still trusted, but Maignan upgrade planned
Robert Sanchez has enjoyed an upturn in form, performing superbly at the Club World Cup and continuing strongly into the 2025/26 campaign.
His shot-stopping has been reliable, though his distribution remains an area of weakness compared to the modern elite keepers.
Maignan, however, would represent a significant upgrade. He combines sharp reflexes with composure in possession, attributes that align perfectly with Chelsea’s evolving style under Enzo Maresca.
The Blues also believe the presence of both Sanchez and Maignan would provide excellent squad depth and allow for rotation across a packed fixture schedule.
Contract length could be decisive
One sticking point is likely to be contract length. Maignan turns 31 next summer, and Chelsea’s recent policy has been to secure younger players on long-term deals.
Whether the Frenchman will be offered a shorter contract with the option of extension, or a longer-term deal in line with his pedigree, remains to be seen.
A major coup if completed
If Chelsea do complete the signing of Maignan on a free transfer, it would be considered one of the shrewdest deals of next summer.
A world-class goalkeeper with Champions League pedigree, arriving at no cost beyond wages and bonuses, could transform the club’s defensive foundations for years to come.
