Oihan Sancet Transfer News

Arsenal are reportedly preparing to make a move for Athletic Bilbao’s Oihan Sancet next summer, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The midfielder, who scored 17 goals and registered three assists last season, has attracted the attention of several Premier League sides, with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United also linked.

Why Arsenal want Oihan Sancet

Despite adding Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi during the most recent transfer window,

Arsenal believe Sancet could offer a new dimension to their midfield. The report even describes the Spaniard as the “missing piece” for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Known for his physical presence, technical skill and ability to play as an attacking midfielder or forward, Sancet would provide Arsenal with added flexibility in their attacking rotations.

Funding the deal through Mikel Merino sale

One of the more surprising claims from Spain is that Arsenal could finance a deal for Sancet by selling Mikel Merino, who only joined from Real Sociedad in 2024.

The Gunners paid £32 million for him, and while he has proved useful with his versatility and occasional goal contributions, he has yet to fully establish himself as a regular starter.

Arteta has previously praised Merino for stepping into unfamiliar roles and delivering important moments, but Sancet’s similar versatility — with a greater goalscoring edge — may make the younger Spaniard a more attractive long-term option.

Tottenham and Manchester United also interested

Arsenal are not alone in their pursuit. Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are both monitoring Sancet’s situation closely.

Spurs see him as a potential creative force to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s midfield, while United are assessing him as part of their ongoing rebuild under Ruben Amorim.

The competition means Arsenal may need to act decisively if they want to secure the 24-year-old’s signature ahead of their domestic rivals.

What next for Arsenal’s midfield planning?

Arsenal’s strong squad depth means there is no urgent need for January reinforcements, but the long-term strategy is clear: Arteta wants a midfield with goals, creativity, and flexibility.

Sancet fits that profile perfectly, and the Gunners are prepared to make bold moves — even if that includes parting ways with Merino — to bring him in.
