Manchester City have announced that academy graduate Rico Lewis has signed a new five-year contract extension, keeping him at the Etihad until 2030, with the option of a further year that could see him remain at the club until 2031.
The 20-year-old, who made 44 appearances across all competitions last season, has been rewarded with improved terms after firmly establishing himself as one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted young players.
Able to operate both at full-back and in midfield, Lewis has been part of City’s setup since the age of eight and continues to be one of the brightest talents to emerge from their academy.
Rico Lewis delighted to stay at boyhood club
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Lewis described the moment as “special” for him and his family, underlining his deep connection with the club.
“Manchester City mean everything to me so to have been given the opportunity to sign this new contract is such a special moment both for me personally and my family,” he said.
“It’s an absolute honour and privilege to represent the club every single day and to play in front of our fantastic fans. I will give everything to help us achieve more success this season and beyond.”
City see Rico Lewis as the model of their future
Director of football Hugo Viana praised Lewis for embodying the values that Manchester City want to be defined by.
“Rico embodies everything we aspire to be at Manchester City, and we are delighted he has signed his new contract,” Viana said.
“Despite only being 20, he has already gained a wealth of experience. His attitude is first class, and we have no doubt he will play a very big part in our push to bring more success to the club going forward.”
Interest fended off
Lewis’ rise had not gone unnoticed elsewhere, with Nottingham Forest showing strong interest during the summer transfer window.
However, his commitment to City — and the club’s clear desire to keep him as a central figure in their long-term plans — ensures he remains firmly in Guardiola’s plans as they continue their pursuit of silverware at home and in Europe.
