On deadline day, Manuel Akanji sealed a switch from Manchester City to Inter Milan, joining the Serie A giants on an initial loan with a €15 million option to buy. That clause could become an obligation if the Nerazzurri go on to clinch the Scudetto this season.
Guardiola’s blunt message sparked move
Speaking on international duty, the 30-year-old admitted that Pep Guardiola’s words played a key role in his decision to leave the Etihad.
With six centre-backs vying for places, Akanji revealed the manager was clear about the rotation.
“Pep made it clear to us six centre-backs that two would play and two would be on the bench,” Akanji told reporters. “That wasn’t nice to hear because I always expect to be on the pitch.”
That level of competition pushed him to accept Inter’s proposal, where more regular playing time looks likely.
Akanji’s early impressions of Inter
Despite the abrupt exit, Akanji has already spoken positively about his new environment in Lombardy.
“I’m very happy it worked out. I like Inter very much,” he said, hinting at a fresh chapter in his career.
While he hasn’t completely ruled out a return to City, the relatively low purchase clause and Inter’s need for defensive stability suggest his future may be in Italy if his loan goes well.
“The fact is: I’m on loan at Inter, so theoretically a return to Manchester is possible. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to say goodbye to City yet, but I definitely want to do that with a team meal, which isn’t easy to schedule. It’s important that I get to say goodbye and can start again.”
Inter’s defensive boost with Manuel Akanji
Akanji arrives as Inter’s oldest signing of the summer, bringing both talent and experience to a back line that required reinforcements.
For Simone Inzaghi, the Swiss defender’s versatility and Champions League know-how could prove crucial as Inter chase domestic and European honours.
