Manchester City are pushing to finalise the signing of Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, with talks between the clubs progressing on transfer deadline day.

The framework of a deal has been agreed in principle, though details remain to be settled before Monday’s 7pm deadline.

City’s pursuit of Donnarumma is directly tied to the future of Ederson, who is edging closer to a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

The Brazilian has been a central figure at the Etihad since his £35 million arrival from Benfica in 2017, making 372 appearances and keeping 168 clean sheets. However, the club will only sanction his departure if Donnarumma officially arrives as his replacement.

While Donnarumma’s shot-stopping ability ranks among the best in world football, questions remain over whether his style fits Pep Guardiola’s system.

Critics argue that his distribution and reluctance to command aerial situations do not align with the demands of City’s possession-heavy approach.

Guardiola has always valued goalkeepers who can build play from the back, and Donnarumma’s limitations in that regard may present a challenge.

Nevertheless, City see value in his pedigree and experience. Still only 25, Donnarumma has already lifted major honours in Italy and France, while also being regarded as one of the finest pure goalkeepers of his generation.

PSG, meanwhile, are happy to respect his wish to move, with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi giving him a warm farewell in recent days.

For PSG, Donnarumma’s departure marks a continuation of their shift away from the high-profile “Galactico” era. Having arrived on a free transfer in 2021, his sale represents profit as the club pivots toward a policy of recruiting younger players on lower wages.

City now face a crucial race against time. If they can complete Donnarumma’s arrival before the deadline, Ederson will be allowed to leave, ending an era at the Etihad while opening a new chapter for Guardiola’s side between the posts.
