Liverpool’s transfer activity under Arne Slot shows no signs of slowing down, despite spending over £420 million on new signings during the summer window.
The Reds reshaped their squad in dramatic fashion, strengthening across several areas of the pitch.
Now, attention has reportedly turned towards further reinforcements, with Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez emerging as a surprise name linked with a switch to Anfield.
The Argentine international, who previously played for Manchester City, missed Atletico’s recent defeat to Liverpool at Anfield but continues to be associated with a potential Premier League return.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown suggested earlier this year that Liverpool had been monitoring Alvarez as they considered adding another versatile attacker.
However, circumstances at Anfield have since changed, casting doubt on the likelihood of such a move.
Liverpool unlikely to pursue Julian Alvarez due to price and squad depth
While Alvarez’s qualities are well known, Liverpool’s recent signings mean the need for another forward has diminished.
The arrivals of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike this summer have already bolstered Slot’s attacking ranks, reducing the urgency to pursue additional firepower.
Atletico Madrid are also expected to place a huge valuation on Alvarez, with reports suggesting they would demand well over £100 million for the 24-year-old.
That figure alone is seen as prohibitive, especially given Liverpool’s current transfer strategy.
Sources close to the club suggest the Reds are unlikely to sanction another big-money move in the immediate future.
Football Insider reported earlier this month that Liverpool do not plan on spending heavily in the next two windows following their record-breaking outlay this summer. The focus is expected to shift towards stability and developing the talent already secured.
Although some within the fanbase believe there are still areas of the squad that require improvement, the hierarchy remain cautious about financial balance.
With Atletico determined to keep Alvarez and Liverpool already stacked with attacking options, a deal appears highly improbable.
For now, Liverpool’s supporters may have to set aside any excitement about seeing Julian Alvarez in red again, as both finances and squad depth point away from a move.
