Levi Colwill Transfer News

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill remains admired by Liverpool, but the Reds have accepted that a deal for the England international is currently out of reach. Despite long-term interest, no formal approach has ever been made, according to recent reports.

Liverpool weighing up defensive options

Arne Slot’s side are assessing their options ahead of the January transfer window following the injury blow to Giovanni Leoni. The young Italian centre-back suffered an ACL injury last month, underwent surgery, and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

With Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez now the only fit senior centre-backs available, Liverpool’s recruitment team are discussing the possibility of bringing in defensive reinforcements in January.

According to talkSPORT, internal talks have begun regarding the need for another central defender, though the club’s preference is to pursue a player who fits both their tactical and long-term data-driven model.

Colwill admired but unavailable

Levi Colwill, who has established himself as a regular starter under Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, continues to be viewed as a player with immense potential and the right profile for Liverpool’s future plans.

However, the Merseyside club believe that a deal is unrealistic at this stage, given Chelsea’s reluctance to sell to a Premier League rival.

Colwill remains contracted to Chelsea until 2029, and with the Blues keen to build their defensive core around him, Liverpool have opted against making any formal bid.

Guehi, Botman, and others on Liverpool’s radar

Former Chelsea defender Marc Guehi also remains on Liverpool’s list after being closely linked with a £35 million move to Anfield in the summer. However, the Crystal Palace star is now expected to see out the season in South London before considering his future after the 2026 World Cup.

Liverpool are also monitoring other centre-backs across Europe, including Newcastle’s Sven Botman, Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho, Anderlecht’s Zeno Debast, and Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande — all of whom score highly in the club’s performance data model.

Meanwhile, contract talks are ongoing with Ibrahima Konate, whose current deal is set to expire in less than nine months. Real Madrid are said to be keeping a close watch, and the Frenchman will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement from January if no extension is signed.

Focus turns to Chelsea clash

Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening in a key Premier League encounter.

The Reds will be looking to respond after recent defensive struggles, while Chelsea aim to build momentum following their 1-0 Champions League victory over Benfica earlier in the week.

The game could serve as a timely reminder of what Liverpool are missing — a composed, left-footed defender like Colwill, whose name continues to linger in discussions around Anfield, even if a transfer seems off the table for now.
