Liverpool are once again facing a familiar dilemma: a key player approaching the latter stages of his contract while Europe’s elite watch closely.
This time, it is Ibrahima Konate, who, like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold before him, finds himself in the middle of uncertainty over his long-term future.
According to Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go Podcast, talks over a new deal have stalled.
“For sure Real Madrid are very attentive to the situation of Ibrahima Konate… For Konate and Liverpool, at the moment it looks difficult. There is still no agreement, still nothing really close,” Romano said, adding that Los Blancos are keeping a close eye on developments, with his contract set to expire in 2026.
Spanish reports have gone further, suggesting that Real Madrid could even test Liverpool’s resolve as early as January, creating potential pressure on the Anfield hierarchy.
Growing influence on and off the pitch
After a mixed start to the season, Konate reminded fans of his calibre with a dominant display in the Merseyside derby, winning 10 of his 13 duels. Performances like that show why he is viewed as central to Arne Slot’s defence.
But his impact runs deeper than just matchdays. As reported by The Athletic, Konate has played a crucial role in helping Hugo Ekitike settle at the club, with the striker crediting his quick adaptation—and five goals in eight games—to the French defender’s guidance.
This influence highlights Konate’s growing status as a leader in a squad already stretched thin by injuries.
Contract value and Liverpool’s depth issues
Currently earning £70,000 per week, Konate’s wages are well below those of many of his teammates. For a 26-year-old who has become a cornerstone of the side, there is a strong argument that his deal should better reflect his importance.
The urgency has only intensified following Giovanni Leoni’s ACL injury, which has left Liverpool with just three fit senior centre-backs. With the club competing on multiple fronts, Slot knows that losing focus on Konate’s situation could destabilise their campaign.
What comes next for Ibrahima Konate
The coming months will be pivotal. If Liverpool cannot tie Konate down soon, Real Madrid’s interest will inevitably grow stronger. The message from Romano is clear: there is no imminent breakthrough.
For Liverpool, the choice is straightforward yet delicate—either reward Konate with a contract that matches his value or risk slipping into another prolonged saga that casts a shadow over a season brimming with potential.
One thing is certain: Anfield cannot afford to let another key figure drift into contractual limbo.
