Dayot Upamecano Transfer News

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild could take a new twist, with reports suggesting the club may consider Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano as a potential target.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Frenchman is being weighed up as an option alongside Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who remains high on the Reds’ list despite a collapsed summer move.

Guehi setback opens door for Dayot Upamecano interest

The Merseyside club came close to landing Guehi during the recent transfer window, striking a verbal agreement with Palace before the Eagles pulled the plug on deadline day.

With no replacement secured, Palace blocked the £35 million switch, leaving Liverpool frustrated.

Guehi has since resumed his role at Selhurst Park and looks set to remain until the end of the season, when his contract expires.

That would allow Liverpool to move for him on a free transfer next summer. However, the club are also closely tracking Upamecano, who could be available under similar circumstances.

The 26-year-old defender, currently under contract until June 2026, is eligible to negotiate a pre-contract with overseas clubs from January.

While his Bayern career has faced ups and downs, Upamecano has grown into a more reliable performer under Vincent Kompany, showing improved consistency and maturity.

This season, the Frenchman has completed 91% of his passes, averaged 5.3 recoveries per game and maintained a near 50% duel success rate.

Primarily operating as a right centre-back, his form has strengthened his reputation as one of Europe’s top defenders.

Liverpool’s defensive plans could also depend on Ibrahima Konaté, whose future remains uncertain.

With Real Madrid circling and his contract running down, the Reds may be forced to prepare for life without him.

In that case, pursuing Upamecano as a direct replacement — while also securing Guehi — could represent smart business.

With Virgil van Dijk edging closer to the twilight of his career, Liverpool’s need to secure long-term solutions at the back is pressing.

Guehi’s comfort on the left and Upamecano’s strength on the right could provide the perfect balance in a refreshed central defensive partnership for the years ahead.
