Manchester United are reportedly ready to test Crystal Palace’s resolve with a £60million bid for Adam Wharton, as Ruben Amorim looks to reshape his midfield ahead of next season.
Club officials believe that such an offer could convince the Eagles to part ways with one of their brightest young stars.
Amorim’s Midfield Overhaul Plans
United’s struggles in midfield have been a recurring issue this season, with Amorim’s preferred pairing of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes coming under increasing scrutiny.
Despite investing heavily in attack during the summer, the club failed to strengthen its midfield depth — a mistake they now intend to correct.

Amorim is said to be a huge admirer of Wharton, believing the 21-year-old has the technical ability, composure, and intelligence required to thrive at Old Trafford.
With both Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo tipped to leave the club, the Portuguese coach views Wharton as a cornerstone for United’s midfield rebuild.
Adam Wharton Rapid Rise to Stardom
Wharton’s journey has been nothing short of meteoric. After bursting onto the scene with Blackburn Rovers, he earned an £18million move to Crystal Palace in February 2024.
Since then, he has become one of the Premier League’s most consistent young performers, impressing with his calmness in possession, defensive awareness, and ability to dictate tempo.
His rise continued last summer when he was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 — a remarkable achievement for a player who had only just completed his first full Premier League campaign.
Under Oliver Glasner, Adam Wharton has established himself as a key figure at Selhurst Park, helping Palace to FA Cup success and European qualification.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting interest from several top clubs, with Manchester United now leading the chase.
Palace’s History of Selling Big
Crystal Palace have shown a willingness to cash in on star players when the right offer arrives. Last summer, Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal for £67.5million, while Michael Olise moved to Bayern Munich the year before.
The South London club operates on a sustainable model, and a £60million bid for Wharton would certainly test their resolve.
However, Palace are in a strong negotiating position. Wharton’s contract runs until 2029, and with his importance to Glasner’s system, any sale would only happen at a premium price.
Manchester United’s Midfield Situation
United’s midfield is expected to undergo significant changes in the coming months. Kobbie Mainoo, who has struggled for minutes under Amorim, is a target for Napoli, who are confident of landing him on loan in January.
Meanwhile, Casemiro’s contract expires next year, and the club are unlikely to offer an extension given his declining influence and high wages.
Amorim sees Wharton as a long-term solution — a technically gifted midfielder capable of controlling games and providing balance alongside a more dynamic partner. His age and Premier League experience make him an ideal candidate for United’s evolving project.
A Statement Signing in the Making
After spending nearly £200million on forwards Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha during the last window, United are now turning their attention to building a stronger midfield core.
Wharton represents exactly the kind of intelligent, modern player Amorim wants to build around — young, adaptable, and comfortable in high-pressure situations.
If the Red Devils can convince Crystal Palace to sell, this could be one of the most defining transfers of United’s new era under Amorim.
For now, Palace remain firm, but with Manchester United’s interest growing and Wharton’s stock rising, a major January or summer battle looks increasingly inevitable.
