Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has explained his decision to remain with the LaLiga champions despite late summer transfer interest from Chelsea.
The 22-year-old Spaniard, who emerged as a key figure under Hansi Flick last season, was the subject of speculation as the Blues explored a deal in the final days of the window.
Reports in Spain suggested Chelsea made initial contact in late August and even sent an informal offer worth £34.8m to Barcelona’s sporting director Deco.
However, the proposal was dismissed as “ridiculous,” with Deco making it clear that Fermin Lopez would have to personally push for an exit if he wanted the move.
Fermin Lopez makes his stance clear
The midfielder, who is approaching 100 senior appearances for his boyhood club, has now insisted he never considered leaving Camp Nou.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Fermin Lopez said:
“Well, in the end, my priority has always been to be at Barça. I arrived when I was 12; it was my dream to be here, to be able to reach the first team.
“It’s always a compliment when there’s interest from other clubs, but the truth is, I always had the idea of staying at Barça and being able to succeed here. I’ve always fought to be here, to play for Barça. My goal is to stay here.”
He acknowledged that football can be unpredictable but reiterated that his focus remains on building a long-term future at Barcelona, by rising from La Masia to the first team.
A rising influence in Barcelona’s midfield
Fermin Lopez’s performances last season underline his value to the Catalan side. He featured in 46 matches across all competitions, contributing eight goals and ten assists.
His impact in LaLiga was particularly notable, with six goals and five assists helping Barça secure the domestic title.
However, the new campaign has brought a slower start. After being substituted at half-time in the opening 3-0 win over Mallorca, Lopez has managed only 28 minutes of action in the following two matches, leaving fans eager to see him regain his rhythm.
For Barcelona, keeping Fermin Lopez despite Premier League interest represents a statement of faith in their academy graduate. For Lopez himself, it is the continuation of a dream he has chased since the age of 12 — to succeed at the club he calls home.
