The news outlet GiveMeSport reported that Chelsea is now the front-runner to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during this January transfer window, being a Chelsea academy graduate.
The 24-year-old centre-back joined Chelsea in 2021 for £18 million before signing for the Toffee and has since grown to become one of the best-performing Premier League defenders and an England national football team regular.
Chelsea’s growing defensive worries will be boosted by the potential return of Guehi. Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile have been sidelined with injuries, and this has exposed the team mainly at the back, making the Head Coach, Enzo Maresca, look for defensive players.
Despite recently acquiring young Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino from Boca Juniors, Maresca wants more experienced talent on the team. The equally dynamic Guehi can fulfil this role, as he strikes the perfect balance between strength and technical skill.
Crystal Set £75 Million For Marc Guehi
Chelsea’s interest in Marc Guehi seems perfect, especially given that Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Manchester United have reportedly reduced their bid limits as a result of financial problems.
Last summer, Guehi was valued at £75m by Crystal Palace, who turned down huge bids, but Chelsea’s power in this window could put the Eagles to the test.
Palace would ideally like to keep their captain until the season is over but Chelsea’s persistence might push for a Winter signing.
While Guehi’s return would solve the current issues with the defence of Chelsea, this would be more than just a short-term solution.
His leadership and experience with a Premier League side make him the ideal man to execute Maresca’s plan of assembling a young and dynamic team to give the club major trophies. Also, he may gain advantages regarding the club’s culture and expectations.
The reported transfer fee, which is expected to be anything between £70-£75 million, would represent a huge outlay.
But Guehi has perspective and quality and could make an immediate impact as Chelsea targets a Champions League spot and a return to the UEFA Champions League.
