Amorim’s Manchester United side were handed an early advantage when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was shown a red card at Old Trafford.
However, United’s task was complicated after Casemiro’s dismissal late in the first half. Despite the setback, Amorim’s men battled to secure a crucial three points, offering hope of momentum after a poor start to the season.
Following the game, the United boss was quizzed about one of his predecessors after Jose Mourinho was confirmed as the new Benfica manager. Wantaway midfielder Kobbie Mainoo also featured briefly, replacing captain Bruno Fernandes in the 87th minute.
Barcelona push for Marcus Rashford deal amid disciplinary setback
One player no longer in Amorim’s squad is Marcus Rashford, who completed a loan switch to Barcelona this summer.
But the England forward endured a mixed weekend in Spain, dropped to the bench by Hansi Flick for arriving late to training before the Getafe clash.
Rashford, fresh from scoring a Champions League brace in his previous outing, responded in style. Introduced at half-time for Raphinha, he wasted no time making an impact, assisting Dani Olmo within 17 minutes as Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 win.
Flick dismissed the notion of a punishment, insisting the decision was about rotation:
“For Rashford, it’s normal not to play, matches are every three or four days. We have to manage his minutes.”
Barcelona, however, are already plotting to make the move permanent next summer.
The Catalan giants believe they can secure Rashford for around £26m, but United are holding firm with a valuation closer to £35m.
While the option to buy exists, the gap in valuation could spark a prolonged transfer battle.
